Kids Need Carbs!

Many parents worry that their kiddo “only likes carbs”—crackers, cereal, granola bars, chips, etc.  I call these “kid foods” —-kids love ‘em and parents wish they’d eat less of ‘em!

In my experience kids like those foods because they’re always the same and that sameness is comforting.  Kids know what they’re getting from packaged food!

Goldfish crackers at home are going to be the same taste and texture as the Goldfish crackers that you get at the airport or school or in a different state.   Food companies make sure of the consistency of their product.

Here’s the thing: Kids NEED carbs.  Their bodies are growing at a rapid rate and the sweet, starchy taste of carbohydrates indicates food full of energy!  However, it’s important to be sure that your kiddo is offered OTHER types of carbohydrate sources too—whole grains such as brown rice, sweet potatoes, quinoa, popcorn (!), whole grain breads & pastas, and fruit.
