Why I Stand by Fortified Cereals

A recent article in the Washington Post has got me a bit peeved.  The article implies that Registered Dietitians are responsible for o*esity and that we’re in the “pocket” of Big Cereal Companies. There is so much to unpack in this article, but I’m going to focus on just one thing—the 3 reasons I recommend fortified cereals all the time.

If you’re here with me on my blog, I’m assuming that you have a kiddo who is a selective eater.  If your kiddo is not a picky eater, I’m glad you’re here anyway!

  1. Cereals are often “accepted” by selective eaters because of their consistency and crunch.  If dry cereal is one of the foods that your child eats regularly, you won’t hear me recommend taking it away. Instead, we may talk about expanding (food chaining) the dry cereals that your kiddo will eat.
  2. Dry cereals are fortified with iron, which is a nutrient that many children (picky or not) fall short of.
  3. Lastly, lots of families are doing their best to feed their kids on a budget.  Dry cereals are a nutritious, cost-effective way to feed your family.

It’s important to me that the families I work with don’t feel shame about the way that they feed their kiddos. I’m here for you.
