Kids need carbs!!

Here’s a reminder that kids need carbs (as we all do)!

Starchy and sweet foods indicate energy and little kids need lots of energy since they’re in a period of rapid growth. As kids’ growth tapers off a bit around puberty, their palate often “matures” and they are a bit more adventurous with food.

This is not to say that we should let our kiddos eat pretzels and bread all day.  Aim for at least 50% of carb intake to come from whole fruits & veggies, whole wheat bread & pasta and grains such as brown rice, quinoa and barley.

Did you know that popcorn is a whole grain?  Look for microwave popcorn that is lower in sodium and doesn’t contain “butter flavor”–you can always add real butter & a dash of salt.  Or make your popcorn the “old fashioned” way on the stove top.  I’ve been told that you can also make popcorn in an airfryer—can anyone confirm this?

Snack idea:  popcorn drizzled with a touch of melted peanut butter
