Old fashioned foods–why do they make us feel so nostalgic?
Old-fashioned foods have a way of pulling at our hearts—and our memories—and it’s not just about taste. Here’s why they feel so nostalgic:
My Grandma’s homemade rolls, my dad’s New England baked beans, and the cookies my mom made every week. These foods remind me of people who cared for me, and every bite brings back that feeling of warmth and love.
Old-fashioned meals often show up at holidays. Think about the dishes that you look forward to at Thanksgiving. My Aunt Claire made peanut butter fudge every year and I think of her every time I see fudge at a candy store. Fudge is linked in my mind to my Aunt Claire and it takes me back to my childhood filled with cousins and special food.
These foods are usually simple, familiar, and hearty—I grew up on Cream of Wheat cereal. I don’t think many folks are eating Cream of Wheat any more, but I still love it! I find comfort in a bowl of hot cereal, a favorite casserole or a slice of meatloaf.
I say it all the time–food is connection. A recipe passed down from one generation to the next can feel like holding a bit of your family’s history.
What food are you nostalgic for?
