Does Picky Eating Change With Age?

Are there times when kiddos will be pickier than others? Yup!  Between 18-24 months and again between 5-6 years old most children will be a little tougher to feed.

Toddlers are programmed to say NO! and are learning that they are independent little beings.  Saying “no” to foods that they ate just yesterday can be super frustrating as a parent!

Staying calm can be tricky, but being consistent about feeding boundaries is your secret sauce for getting through these trying developmental phases.

Snack Idea: Sandwich “Sushi’ Rolls

(adapted from Little Helpers Toddler Cookbook)

Ingredients:

  • 4 slices whole wheat bread
  • 1 small english cucumber
  • ½ avocado, pitted
  • ¼ c. hummus
  • ¼ c. grated carrots

Instructions:

  1. Cut the crusts off the bread.
  2. Slice cucumber into thin rounds, then cut into strips.  Cut avocado into 8 slices.
  3. Use a rolling pin to flatten each slice of bread; get it as thin as possible.
  4. Spread a thin layer of hummus over each slice.  In the center of each slice, place a few slices of cucumber, 2 slices of avocado, and a sprinkle of grated carrots.  Starting with the longer side of each bread slice, roll the edge over the fillings, then continue to roll until the bread meets and seals.
  5. Cut each roll into 6-8 pieces and serve.
