Gardening: A Way for Kiddos to Learn About Food

Do you have a sunny spot in your yard to plant a few seeds? A few fast-growing options are radishes and lettuce.  How about herbs such as chives, parsley or rosemary?  Herbs grow well in a pot on a sunny windowsill.  And don’t forget one of those upside-down hanging tomato planters—they look funny but work great!

Let your kids plant, grow and experience fresh foods!

When I was a kid we’d run to my dad’s garden and eat green beans or small cucumbers fresh from the vine and munch tomatoes whole, like apples.  I have fond memories of that garden.

Gardening not only builds strong memories for your family, but increases your kiddos curiosity around food and where it comes from!

Recipe: Easy Pasta Salad

  • Mix 1/2 cup cooked pasta (any shape)
  • Chopped veggies such as tomatoes, green beans, cucumbers, celery, peppers, chives, parsley–whatever you have on hand
  • Add some shredded or cubed cheese or chopped hard boiled eggs or olives or canned tuna
  • Toss with bottled salad dressing like italian or ranch or homemade vinaigrette
