Visual Helpers
I’m a huge fan of check lists and visual schedules for kids. I think it’s the former teacher in me. I’m such a check list dork that I when I make a list I even make that little box before each item just so that I can tick it off! Here are a couple of ideas to keep your family organized and running….
A visual schedule can be read and followed by the youngest of kiddos. Consider the schedule that a teacher has in her classroom. It’s posted in an easy to see place and referred to often: “we’ll go outside for recess after reading”. Kids thrive on a predictable routine. There is comfort in knowing what to expect and what’s coming up next. Visual schedules can be helpful at home to bring a bit of structure to a wide-open time.
Check lists reduce nagging & promote independence. What if you created a “Morning” checklist for school days? Brush teeth- check, homework in backpack-check, shoes on-check! How about one for getting ready for dinner? Something like “wash hands, bring place mats to table, put out utensils & napkins”.
Check lists can also be used for one of my favorite snacking strategies: “Buddy Up” foods so that snacks are hitting more than just one food group.
Give a kiddo a laminated check list with a wipe-off marker and let them go to it. This one has both pictures and check off boxes.
Want to bring a bit of routine into your place? Just reach out, I’m happy to help.
Snack Idea: mini fruit & yogurt parfait
