Mark your calendars-it’s National Pastry Day!

Mark your calendars-it’s National Pastry Day! It’s no secret that I love to bake. I love to watch baking shows. And I’m obsessed with The Great British Baking Show! If you haven’t watched it, give it a go. It’s charming and family friendly.

I’ve never tried to make puff pastry, eclairs, my own custard or any of the other more advanced challenges on the show. But I fantasize about what I’d bake if I were on the show and the theme was “Biscuit Week”. I like to say, “there’s no recipe that has too many ingredients if the outcome is a cookie!” I

“Pastry” sounds daunting, but “cookies”, “muffins” or “pie” sounds more doable. My mom is a cookie baker and I have lots of memories of baking with her. When my kids were little I baked cookies with them too. (Remember: Food is Connection).

How can you bake with kids?

What can you bake with your family? When it comes to cooking with kids, think simple and fast! A dough that needs to be chilled for hours may test their patience. Something that is fiddly and too complicated will lose their attention. Read through the ingredients and directions and see what your kiddo can do. Toddlers can pour pre-measured ingredients & stir, pre-schoolers can turn on the blender (with guidance) and learn to crack open an egg, school aged kids can practice scooping & measuring and older kids can figure out what to do if the recipe calls for 3/4 of a cup and you only have a 1/4 cup measure.

Regardless of the outcome, baking together is a great way to expose your kiddo to new foods and ingredients.

Embrace “National Pastry Day” and get baking!
