Get Cooking!

I encourage kids to cook all the time!  I’m a HUGE fan of Chop Chop Magazine (not sponsored, just a fan) because it gives kids ages 2-12 hands-on, easy recipes to try out.  AND—mail!! Getting mail all by itself is super exciting!

Here are some ways that kids can help in the kitchen:

Toddlers (18 mo- 3 yo):

  • Add pre-measured ingredients
  • Stirring & shaking
  • Hold down buttons of appliances with help
  • Rip lettuce
  • Taste things
  • Grow a garden

Early Childhood (4 yo- 7 yo):

  • Everything above and…..
  • Measure & weigh ingredients
  • Brainstorm meals with guidance
  • Use scissors & safety knives

Elementary School Ages (8 yo- 11 yo)

  • Everything above and……
  • Make salad dressing
  • Prep easy-to-chop foods with a regular knife

Middle School Ages (12 & up)

  • Everything above and…..
  • Measure using a scale
  • Operate blender and other appliances
  • Prep ingredients with a chef’s knife

These are just ideas—you know your kids’ skills best!  And don’t forget to teach your kids how to clean up after themselves 🙂
