Milk alternatives are not nutritionally equivalent

A reminder about dairy-alternatives:

I’ve seen a few toddlers recently who have been put on almond milk because they’re dairy intolerant/allergic and their parents have been told that the almond milk is “healthier” than cow’s milk in the long run.  Respectfully, I must disagree.  Almond milk is usually calcium fortified (yay!), but is extremely low in protein (<1 g/serving vs. 8 g/serving of cow’s milk) and low in fat, which is needed for brain development. Cow’s milk is fortified with Vitamin D. Other milks–not always.

Remember when I told you in a blog a while ago that I really don’t care if your kid drinks cow’s milk or not? I really mean it, but it’s important to me that your kiddo gets the nutrients that they might miss by skipping cow’s milk.

Better non-dairy options: soy milk or a pea-protein based milk like Ripple or NotMilk

Snack idea: Pea Pops  Give this a shot and let me know how it goes.
