Supporting vs. Controlling Your Kid’s Eating: What’s the Difference?

If you’ve ever sat at the dinner table thinking, “Why won’t they just take one bite?”—you’re not alone. Feeding kids can feel like a daily test of patience, but one small mindset shift can make a huge difference: supporting vs. controlling.

When we support our kids’ eating, we’re setting them up for success without turning mealtime into a power struggle. Support looks like:

  • Offering a variety of foods (some familiar, some new).
  • Keeping a regular meal and snack schedule.
  • Trusting your child to decide how much to eat (or if they eat at all).
  • Modeling balanced eating yourself (eat your veggies parents!).

On the flip side, controlling can backfire. Control sounds like:

  • “You have to finish your plate before you get dessert.”
  • “Just three more bites or no TV.”
  • Constantly pushing veggies or taking sweet treats away as punishment.

Control might feel like it “works” in the moment, but it often creates stress, power struggles, and even less willingness to try new foods.

The goal? Build trust. When kids feel safe and respected around food, they’re more likely to stay curious, learn to listen to their bodies, and (eventually!) expand what they eat.

So, next time you’re tempted to beg, bribe, or bargain—take a deep breath. Supporting beats controlling every time.

Snack Idea:

Apples & cheese slices
