Q: Why do you need to know so much stuff about my kid?? Just tell me what to feed them!!

Geeeshh—why do you need to know all this stuff about my kid?  I just want them to eat!

This question came from a harried parent who was at the end of her tether.  I get it—she was stressed and simply wanted relief.  Here’s the problem though: I had no idea how to guide her without knowing what was going on for her kiddo.

At our first appointment together, in addition to asking about food likes & dislikes, I’ll ask you about your kiddo’s sleep, activities, school, family life, past medical history, birth, early childhood, learning disabilities, etc so that I get the big picture.

It’s important for me to know about your kiddo’s overall health: Any previously diagnosed conditions, such as insulin resistance or NAFL, to keep in mind? What about sleep? Is your kid a snorer? Breathe with their mouth open? This might indicate an oral structure difference that could make chewing difficult.  Chronic ear infections? And school? A kiddo with ADHD or other learning difficulties may find decision making (like what to have for meals or snacks) challenging. Additionally, ADHD medication may wear off by the end of the day causing less focus around dinner time.  Other medications may cause constipation, loss of appetite or nutrient deficiencies.

So bear with me as I peel back the layers and get to know your kiddo.  I’m looking to get to know their inner workings so that I can give you my best recommendations and have the best chance of success.

Snack Idea:

Vanilla Greek yogurt, berries & granola
