Is Your Kiddo Stubborn?

A Stubborn Kiddo Is Telling Us Something

Kiddos who are “just stubborn” about trying new foods or eating in general, have a reason for digging in their heels. Despite how it feels in the moment, your kiddo isn’t being stubborn to make you nuts! My Speech Pathologist friends like to remind me that “behavior is communication”. Stubborn kids are communicating that something about that food is hard for them.

Let’s Talk About a Few Reasons Why:

  • Poor/low hunger: Kiddos who aren’t hungry, or don’t read their body cues and so miss hunger signals, may reject food.
  • Related to poor/low hunger, kiddos who have been snacking throughout the day may not be interested in a meal, presenting like someone who just isn’t into whatever you’re serving.
  • It’s a developmental phase: There are a few times (between 18-24 months and again around 5-6 years old) where kids are exerting their independence and saying “no” to food is a big deal!
  • Sensory differences: kiddo may be struggling with slippery textures, mixed foods or strong smells of foods.
  • Dysregulation: coming to the table “out of sorts” means kiddo can’t settle in or focus on the meal in front of them.
  • The food is too challenging for their development or feeding skills: Kiddos who lack a rotary chewing pattern will find raw veggies, fruits with peels & meats too challenging.
  • They know that a another meal is an option. Kids may reject a meal that is not their fav if there’s a chance of a back-up.
